3/7/2020 31 teens safe after second St. Paul cave rescue in less than a week

For the second time in the space of a few days, St. Paul firefighters had to rescue trespassers from a notorious cave system in the city's Crosby Farm Regional Park.

On Friday night, the fire department's Technical Rescue crew "assisted in evacuating 31 teens from inside the cave," which is near Crosby Farm Rd. along the Mississippi River.

The department didn't share any more details about the circumstances of the rescue, but as noted in the tweet, no one was injured.

(Hours later on early Saturday morning, the department also assisted in the rescue of an individual who had fallen from a cliff near the Mississippi River.)

Two days before the rescue of the teens, early Wednesday morning, the fire department responded to a "report of people missing" and ended up pulling a group out of the cave:

As Fox 9 reported, the group consisted of three people who were apparently doing some urban exploring.

These two rescues are not unusual; in November 2017, eight people had to be bailed out of the cave system, prompting authorities to issue "stern warnings" to the public to stay away, as the Star Tribune noted at the time.

According to a report from St. Paul Parks & Recreation, the caves in the Crosby Farm bluffs are manmade, having resulted from glass-sand mining.

The fire department noted that "entering the caves is illegal and extremely dangerous."
