6/26/2015 Man injured after fall inside abandoned Minneapolis grain elevator

A man is hospitalized after falling 40 feet inside a grain elevator in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis Fire Department said on Twitter the man fell in the Fruen Mill at around 12:15 a.m. After about an hour he was rescued and taken to Hennepin County medical Center with serious injuries.

KSTP says rescuers used ropes and a backboard to lower the injured man from the the abandoned Fruen Mill elevator.

FOX 9 said the man's injuries include facial trauma and possibly a broken leg. In addition, the station said that one firefighter was taken to HCMC for evaluation with a possible blood exposure.

Two other people were taken away from the scene in police car. People living nearby said that they frequently see people inside the grain elevator, even though the area is private property and trespassing or exploring is prohibited.

The CriticalMinneapolis website called the Fruen elevator "a large graffiti magnet and an attraction for those looking for an adventure." The site notes that in 2005, an 18 year-old from Robbinsdale fell 70 feet inside the empty silo and survived, but a year later, a 32-year-old from Burnsville fell through a hole in the floor to his death.

The elevator has been vacant for more than 20 years and the property has been the subject of on-again, off-again redevelopment talks for years. Plans to convert the space to condos, a brewery and a restaurant have stalled.

Three weeks ago, a University of Minnesota student fell to her death while exploring the abandoned Bunge Tower grain elevator in southeast Minneapolis. Emily Roland, 20, was with three other people when she fell off a ladder on the 10th floor, broke through a wood floor and plummeted into a steel bin.
