8/3/2026 Teen injured after falling 20 stories in Minneapolis grain elevator
An 18-year-old is recovering from life-threatening injuries after falling about 20 stories at a decommissioned grain elevator in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis Police Sergeant Garrett Parten said officers and fire crews were called to the decommissioned Checkerboard Grain Elevator at 3716 Cheatham Ave. at 8:30 p.m. Monday in response to a report that a teen had fallen.
Sgt. Parten said a group of six "urban explorers," three juveniles and three individuals ages between 18 and 20, had broken into the grain elevator to make a social media video. The teen was hanging from a beam approximately 200 feet above the ground before they fell, police said.
Firefighters reached the injured teen with a ladder truck and the teen is being treated at Hennepin Healthcare.
"This individual fell 20 stories, and it is miraculous that they're alive," Sgt. Parten told a group of journalists Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbors told KARE 11 they have repeatedly told police that many kids are breaking into the grain elevators to shoot social media videos.
Parten said that last year there were over 80 incidents involving urban exploring, and so far this year there have been 100.
Minneapolis police have arrested 15 people so far this year for trespassing while urban exploring.
